Foundation, and contour, and palettes, OH MY! All the makeup lingo, videos, and photos going around can make makeup seem intimidating. When we’re not getting glammed up for girl’s night, or dolled up for a date, we like to keep it simple. Our makeup starter guide is a short list of products we can’t live without, and a few great recommendations that you can get right here, on Piggeeback.
We won’t lie to you. A flawless face starts with great skin. Not taking off your makeup before bed, or working out with a face full of foundation, probably isn’t the best idea. We recommend finding a great skincare routine that works for you, and sticking to it. Smooth, gorgeous skin will make all your makeup efforts totally worth it.
You can’t apply makeup without some tools. We’re huge fans of Real Techniques brushes. Their sets make it super easy to grab everything you need and the quality is amazing! You can grab the Flawless Base Set, Sculpting Set, and Enhanced Eye Set for under $60! The only thing we add to our arsenal of makeup tools is a Beauty Blender. Nothing makes foundation and concealer look more smooth and blended than this bad boy. We like the OG version, but the Real Techniques sponge is near perfection.
No girl wants to spend time on her makeup, only for it to crack, smear, or smudge an hour later. Primers are key! For oily skin, we love the NYX Pore Filler. If you have drier skin, try something hydrating like the e.l.f. Hydrating Face Primer. To keep your eye makeup from fading or falling, eyeshadow primers are the way to go! Our everyday go to is the Milani Eyeshadow Primer. If we’re going bolder, or using glitter or shimmer shadows, we splurge and go with Too Faced Shadow Insurance Glitter Glue.
Now that you’re primed and ready to go, it’s foundation time, Aside from a great skincare routine, foundation is what will leave your skin looking flawless. We’re really into Maybelline’s Fit Me foundation right now. They have a matte version and a dewy version. It goes on so smooth and gives you that perfect base for the rest of your makeup look. The best part? It’s only $8.
If you struggle with dark under eyes, or want to brighten up that area, grab Maybelline’s Age Rewind Concealer. They have a variety of shades, including one specifically for brightening. We like that one for a little highlight help.
When using liquid foundations and concealers, it’s always a good idea to use a setting powder to keep your makeup from moving around. For a loose, translucent powder, we love the Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder. It’s great for setting your under eyes! For all over powder, we grab the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder.
That flawless face needs a little dimension back in it! For both our bronzing and contour needs, we always grab our Physician's Formula Butter Bronzer. It has a creamier consistency, making it look a lot more natural on the skin. It blends out and in with your skin so beautifully. We’re also kind of obsessed with the fact that it smells like the beach.
We throw on a little blush above that contour line and nothing makes it all come together better than Wet n Wild Color Icon Blush. Our favorite for summer is the shade Rosé Champagne. It gives you that perfect, lightly pink/peach glow.
We’ve been a little highlight obsessed lately. We have like...a million. Our favorite is the e.l.f. Baked Highlighter in Moonlight Pearls. They have three other colors too, but Moonlight Pearls is definitely our favorite to blend with the Butter Bronzer and Rosé Champagne blush. Serious glowy goals.
Brows. Who hasn’t been in a conversation, watched a tutorial, or browsed the makeup section at Target for this reason lately? Whether you’re a pomade fan, a pencil fan, or a powder fan, we think you’ll love the e.l.f. Eyebrow Kit. It comes with a pomade and a powder, along with a great angled brush to give you the precision you get from a pencil. You can always splurge for this step and get Wunderbrow. We wouldn’t blame you.
To put it on before or after foundation...that is the question. Whether you’re a before or after kind of girl, the Natural Eyeshadow Kit from NYX. It comes with six gorgeous, neutral shades that are perfect together, or for adding in with shades from other palettes. NYX offers a ton of other, small eyeshadow palettes too!
If you’re going for the everyday look, and skipping the falsies, we recommend using an eyeliner pencil for two reasons: 1. It’s way easier and 2. It’s way faster. I have been using this eyeliner, seriously forever, and it has never let me down. The Jordana Easyliner goes on so smooth, lasts all day, and it super pigmented. It’s also a twistup, which we love because, no sharpening!
To make your lashes look like you’re wearing falsies, grab the Lash Domination Mascara from bareMinerals. There’s two versions: the traditional version and the newer version with a petite precision brush. We’ve bought both. We’ve tried both. We LOVE both.
Primer isn’t the only thing that’ll help your makeup last all day. A good setting spray can add a little extra lasting insurance to your look. We’ll admin, we’re probably jumping on the bandwagon here, but we’re really into the Pixi Glow Mist. It’s dual purpose and can be used before or after makeup.
A look is never complete without a little lip color. Whether you’re into a bold, statement lip or something a little more natural, you’ll love the COVERGIRL Colorlicious Gloss. There are plenty of shades to choose from. We love the shade Candylicious for this look.
If you’re keeping it basic, or glamming it up to go out, you’ll get your money’s worth from these products. Check out our Makeup Starter Kit collection for all the products mentioned here.
